Post No. 33. Aloe
Vera.
Aloe Vera is a
plant that has been used for medicinal purposes for some 6,000 years. Ancient
Egyptians depicted the plant on stone carvings. It was given to pharaohs as a burial
gift and called the plant of immortality. The leaves of the aloe Vera plant,
also known as the lily oft the desert, are filled with a clear gel that is used
topically. The outer green part of the leaves are used to make Aloe Vera juice
for internal use. There is no medical evidence that aloe Vera helps tighten skin
but there’s no harm trying it.
Aloe Vera is a succulent
plant species (plants that have some parts that are more than normally
thickened and fleshy, usually to retain water in arid climates or soil
conditions. The word “succulent” comes from the Latin word sucus, meaning
juice, or sap. Succulent plants may store water in various structures, such as
leaves and stems.) of the genus Aloe. An evergreen perennial, it originates
from the Arabian Peninsula but grows wild in tropical climates around the world
and is cultivated for agricultural and medicinal uses. The species is also used
for decorative purposes and grows successfully indoors as a potted plant.
If eaten Aloe Vera
has potential toxicity and maybe dangerous. Some persons may suffer diarrhea,
and the latter can decrease the absorption of a number of prescription drugs
the consumer is taking. It is not recommendable to take aloe Vera orally if the
person has diabetes and studies suggest it may lower the blood glucose levels
to a dangerous level.
Proponents of Aloe
Vera juice believe it is helpful for diseases as diabetes, asthma, epilepsy and
brittle bones. It is used topically for a host of skin conditions, including
burns and abrasions.
Aloe Vera is
extensively used in beauty products. It’s got antiviral and antibacterial
properties, promotes hair growth, prevent itching on the scalp, reduces dandruff
and conditions the hair.
In pots, the
species requires well-drained, sandy potting soil and bright, sunny conditions.
Aloe plants can burn under too much sun or shrivel when the pot does not drain water.
The use of a good quality commercial propagation mix or packaged “cacti and
succulent mix” is recommended, as they allow good drainage. Terra cotta pots
are preferable as they are porous. Potted plants should be allowed to
completely dry before. One of the videos used as a reference shows how to grow Aloe
Vera faster using banana peel fertilizer.
As seen, Aloe
Vera has multiple uses and it is a beneficial gift of nature. The picture above
was taken in my house. If you have any suggestions, please contact me as soon
as possible!
